About the Bissett School of Business

The Bissett School of Business, in the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies, offers a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. Students can pursue majors in human resources, general management (with concentrations in financial analysis, financial services, international business, innovation and entrepreneurship, social innovation and supply chain management), accounting, and marketing. In addition to these majors, the Bissett School of Business offers several minors including human resources, accounting, finance, finance and economics, financial services, business and society and international business, as well as a diploma in Aviation, and certificates in human resources, advanced accounting, and marketing. Approximately 2,100 students are enrolled in the school’s programs. In its approach to curriculum and content development, the school is committed to MRU’s Indigenous Strategic Plan and the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

About the Role

The Department of Management and Human Resources invites applications for a tenure track position in Human Resources, to commence July 1, 2019, subject to final budgetary approval, at the rank of Assistant Professor. A specialization in the following, or a combination of the following areas, would be ideal: Compensation & Benefits, Organization Learning & Development, Employee Relations, and/or Labour Relations.

At Mount Royal, new faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/ scholarship/service pattern (TSS) has a focus on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be actively involved in a research program as well as engaged in service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching/service pattern (TS) has a focus on scholarly informed teaching and service. Applications from either work pattern will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Instruction: Course delivery should place a priority on student engagement and includes work such as preparation of course outlines, other course materials, classroom learning activities, lesson preparation and assessments, and course Blackboard site curation.
  • Research: Applicants interested in the TSS work pattern must be committed to a scholarly research program that contributes to both academia and practice. This is evidenced through engagement in both scholarly and professional forums and publications. 
  • Administration: Administer exams, input final grades upon course completion, and participate in course-related meetings, as required.
  • Service: Coach student competition teams, mentor student clubs, assist with the development of curriculum, and serve on departmental or university committees.
  • Community: At Mount Royal University our industry connections are an important and integral part of our programs. The successful candidate will be required to actively liaise with industry partners or professional associations on behalf of the Bissett School of Business.

As a university committed to teaching and learning informed by scholarship, the successful candidate must possess a passion for teaching excellence and be capable of teaching at the introductory and advanced levels, as evidenced by a strong ability to integrate both theory and practice through effective communication and presentation skills.

The appointed individual will be expected to collaborate with industry and community partners and be involved in course and program development. The successful candidate will actively contribute to enhance the school’s vision, culture and reputation, including participating in service and committee work related to the ongoing operations of the university.

Qualifications

A PhD in Human Resources, or a related field, is strongly preferred (Those who are ABD and very close to successful completion will also be considered.) A Master’s degree is required.

Additionally, the successful candidate will have several of the following attributes: 

  • Teaching experience in human resources at the post-secondary level and the ability to teach introductory through to senior level human resources courses;
  • Proven record of ongoing achievement in research and scholarship;
  • Demonstrated professional human resources experience and expertise;
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation and communication skills;
  • Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation, or similar (e.g. SHRM), designation will be an asset;
  • Experience with academic indigenization or Indigenous business and/or industry partnership activities will be a strong asset;
  • International experience is an asset.
