Design Thinking
Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation and problem solving. It provides a process for inter-connectivity that can be foundational to bridging academic research with applied interdisciplinary research and is critical to changemaking. Design thinking is highly creative and is well-suited to addressing complex problems through challenging existing assumptions and creating innovative solutions.
Design Thinking scholars use this approach to further the theory and practice of their discipline. In the context of the CRC at Mount Royal University (MRU), a Design Thinking scholar will be a faculty member assigned to the appropriate department within the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies. However, the successful candidate will become a catalyst for cross-disciplinary scholarship.

About MRU
Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education, and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, nearly 14,000 credit students choose from 12 bachelor degrees and 35 majors. Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Mohkinstsis,” which we now call the city of Calgary. The Faculty of Business and Communications Studies (FBCS) is composed of the Bissett School of Business and the School of Communication Studies. The School of Business hosts four departments:

Canada Research Chair Program
The Canada Research Chair CRC program was established to enable Canadian universities to foster research excellence and enhance their role as centres of world-class research. Tier II CRC researchers are exceptional emerging researchers, recognized by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. If recommended by the search committee, the candidate will be nominated to a Tier II CRC, with the development of the proposal immediately following for the October 2019 deadline. Nominations for Canada Research Chairs are subject to review by the CRC Secretariat and appointment as a CRC is conditional on the Secretariat’s approval (see the CRC terms of reference http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/).

About the Role
The Faculty of Business and Communications Studies at Mount Royal University invites applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in the area of design thinking research. The successful applicant will also hold a tenure-track/tenured position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The position will commence July 1, 2020, subject to acceptance of the nomination by the Canada Research Chairs Program. The successful applicant will have demonstrated evidence of a sustained and productive research program grounded in design thinking either in an academic or industry setting.
The successful applicant’s research program, while requiring independent work, should also have a collaborative component that will engage and mentor MRU students, faculty members across disciplines, government stakeholders, and community partners. The candidate will be expected to propose an original, innovative research program that demonstrates the potential to achieve international impact in the next five to ten years.
The candidate will have a reduced teaching load. The position is a tenure-track or tenured appointment. The CRC is a five-year appointment, with an opportunity to renew for an additional five years.
The successful candidate will also be expected to provide service with their home department, the Faculty of Business and Communications Studies, and the University, as well as to both the academic and broader community. 

Undergraduate Focus
Mount Royal is committed to undergraduate education and the successful candidate must demonstrate a strong undergraduate teaching background as well as the capacity to contribute to MRU’s undergraduate educational experience. The successful applicant will be prepared to complement the activities at a teaching-focused institution through the hiring of student research assistants, supervising honours projects, and teaching some courses in the applicant’s field of study to complement existing areas of strength at MRU.

Qualifications
Applicants must have obtained a PhD within the last ten years of nomination to the CRC position and will be an outstanding emerging scholar with the potential to achieve an international reputation. These leaves will be taken into consideration during the assessment process. Tier 2 Canada Research Chair position, Disruptive Pedagogies, Athabasca University

Athabasca University (AU) invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in the diverse and interdisciplinary field of Disruptive Pedagogies beginning in July 2020. AU seeks an exceptional emerging scholar with demonstrated potential for leadership and international recognition for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. AU requires the successful candidate to have a PhD in a relevant field and applicants should bring an original program of research, a commitment to transfer knowledge, capacity to receive external funding as well as the potential for building successful research teams.

Disruptive Pedagogies is one of four broad themes identified in AU’s Strategic Research Plan and advances pedagogical theory and practice by calling into question traditional views of education and training, including commonly held assumptions about how people learn and how learning can be nurtured and measured. The theme is broad to allow researchers from a wide range of disciplines to apply. This theme embraces a divers spectrum of topics, including but not limited to best practices in the design and delivery of open, digital, distributed and blended learning across educational settings and learners’ lifespans, with a particular emphasis on the measurement of learning outcomes and the use of non-traditional means to credential learning. It also addresses emerging technologies (e.g. artificial intelligence, augmented reality, immersive learning, gaming, learning analytics, robotics, virtual reality) and their potential for personalizing individual learning experiences based on specific learning styles and needs.

Tier 2 Canada Research Chair Position, Entrepreneurship (SME/SMO), Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières

Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) is calling for applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair dedicated to the study of entrepreneurship and/or SMEs and SMOs. The person sought will complete and strengthen the Institut de Recherche sur les PME [SME Research Institute] (INRPME; http://www.inrpme.ca) team and will make a significant contribution to the development of the Institute’s research topics. All expertise and perspectives regarding the study of entrepreneurship and/or SMEs and SMOs will be considered. Thus, the person sought could be an expert in entrepreneurship and/or SMEs and SMOs with one of the following specializations:

  • A specific theme, such as: entrepreneurial cognition; start-up process; gender, diversity and entrepreneurship; social and sustainable entrepreneurship; entrepreneurial coaching; entrepreneurial education; family entrepreneurship; business transfer; social economy small and medium-sized organizations; high technology SMEs; local and regional development and SMEs-SMOs; etc.
  • A management function: for example, entrepreneurial finance; marketing of SMEs and SMOs; SME-SMO accounting; human resource management in an SME-SMO context; SME-SMO management strategy, performance management within SMEs-SMOs, information system management in an SME-SMO context, etc.

Versatility in research theory and methodology as well as the candidate’s ability to develop fruitful collaborations with other researchers working in the fields of entrepreneurship and/or SMEs and SMOs will be the subject of special attention during assessment of the applications.

Canada Research Chairs

Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs are awarded after a thorough assessment process to exceptional emerging researchers. Candidates who wish to obtain a Tier 2 Chair must have held a Ph.D. for less than 10 years when they submit their application to the Canada Research Chair Program (April 22, 2019). Those who have held a Ph.D. for more than 10 years (and whose careers were interrupted because of maternity leave, parental leave or a prolonged medical leave among others) may have their eligibility examined using the Tier 2 Justification Assessment form from the Canada Research Chair Program.
